These days the modern Indian Bride and Groom are always looking for unique way to celebrate their holy unions at a great deal, but are destination weddings really all that they are cracked up to be? Lets look at some pro’s and cons along with some personal experiences from the DBI Team after entertaining couples in locations like Jamaica, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Mexican destinations including Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen.

PRO’s

  1. it’s like a mini-vacation for everyone.  Guests will be able to enjoy all inclusive amenities (depending on resort), food, drinks, and activities such as sightseeing, scuba or snorkeling excursions, water sports, or shopping.
  2. It’s like a Complete Package: Resorts and tourism organizations have seen the dollar signs behind this trend and so work hard to keep a destination wedding stress-free and simpler. As part of a package deal, many offer the complimentary services of their on-site wedding consultant who will help you coordinate all of the ceremony essentials.
  3. On site vendors.  Many of the key aspects such as hotel rooms, food, drinks, and Venues are covered but many resorts also offer additional vendor services such as sound and lighting, cake, makeup, and floral /decor design.
  4. Cookie-cutter ballroom weddings on a strict timeline are over. A wedding is supposed to be a party, and couples want their guests to relax, drink and have a good time. Many of these settings offer more flexibility including longer cocktail hours and no set end time on many resorts.

CON’S

  1. Planning a Wedding Long Distance and Legal Red Tape:
For those of you not getting married at a resort, you’ll have to juggle all those details yourself long distance. If your destination wedding is in a foreign country or even another state, you might run into complications when trying to get a marriage license. Consider hiring a coordinator who specializes in destination weddings to help you over these speed bumps.
  2. Family Members and Friends You Love May Not Be There Particularly for far-away locations, some guests may not be able to attend due to the expense, or the difficulty of getting time off of work. Older guests may not be able to travel so far away from home. Talk to those who are truly essential before you book tickets and send invitations.
  3. Some resorts charge a fee to bring outside vendors.  Certain venues require you to use their in-house DJ’s but when you need an Indian dj to play bollywood or bhangra you need the Best indian DJ in Houston, DJ Impact.  The venue may charge an additional fee to allow an outside DJ but do you really want a mix of spanish and english music at your Desi Wedding?  We didn’t think so.

But the Bottom line is WHAT is the BOTTOM LINE?!  Are Destinations really more affordable than local wedding events?

-Well this really depends.  The reason that destination weddings can sometimes become a better value is based on the number of guests you are looking to host. Compare a 500 person wedding in Houston Texas to a destination event where only about 150 guests may be able to attend.  Depending on your resort package hosting a destination wedding really can be more affordable.

The DBI teams top choice for destination events are in CANCUN, MEXICO.  Yes, thats right.  The last choice is Hawaii, (at least the big island of Kona Specifically). It’s about a 9 hour flight to Hawaii from Houston, Tx, so you better get used to a very long flight time and a higher costing flight as well.  The big Island has beautiful beaches (but doesn’t just about every beach destination), but there wasn’t much to do for the younger folks as it seemed to cater more to retirees and nightlife options were very dismal.

We know you’ve heard many desi couples plan their big weekend in Cancun, and there’s good reason.

-Cancun has many competitively priced resorts that are very familiar with indian wedding customs and events.

-The service at many Cancun resorts is unparalleled compared to many other destination locations.  The culture is very relaxed and hosts, servers and waiters are ready to cater to your every need.

-The food in Cancun.  Being a big foodie, the freshness and style of cooking varies from destination to destination.  Cancun resorts overall have a great variety of food and offer meats that are cooked better than other locations such as Jamaica.
